Many thanks to South West Lakes Trust for facilitating this camera's location and to The Westcountry Rivers Trust & South West Lakes Trust  Commencement of construction on the dam took place on 19th July 1962. However, work was abruptly halted due to excavation activities that unveiled an extensive expanse of soft kaolinised granite at the site, necessitating costly foundational measures. Subsequently, a revised design was formulated, resulting in the implementation of the current arched design for the dam. On 13th October 1967, the dam was officially inaugurated by Sir John Carew Pole, accompanied by the esteemed Bishop of Truro, Dr. Maurice Key, who bestowed a blessing upon the reservoir.By the time of its unveiling in 1967, the valley situated behind the dam had been entirely submerged, submerging 274 acres of farmland and three country houses. To address the flooding caused by the dam, two causeways were constructed—one located at the southern end and the other in the northwestern corner near the Golden Lion Inn—to facilitate the passage of previously inundated road sections. The dam itself stands at an impressive height of 41.5 meters and spans a width of 244 meters. The construction project incurred a total expenditure of £1,125,000 (£21,723,500 equivalent as of 2023).The Outdoor + Active Centre situated at Stithians Lake offers unparalleled facilities for engaging in a variety of watersports. Surrounded by a distinctive environment, the center provides contemporary and well-equipped amenities both on and off the water, catering to activities such as sailing, windsurfing, and Stand up Paddleboarding. The center also offers tuition services, equipment rental, and launch facilities. Additionally, those interested in fly fishing for trout can avail themselves of season and day permits, as well as boat rental services offered by the center. Located in close proximity to the center, an informal campsite provides an ideal option for individuals seeking to spend a weekend immersed in water-based activities.
